Dwight Freeney’s Father Would ‘Love for Him’ to Play for Patriots, But His Wife Doesn’t Like New England

Dwight Freeney was in San Diego visiting with the Chargers this week, but his father wants to see him in New England.

Hugh Freeney discussed his son’s NFL future and the prospect of playing for the Patriots, during an interview on Adam Schein‘s radio show on Sirius XM on Thursday. He addressed some of Dwight’s possible landing spots and even mentioned that he would “love” for his son to play for the Patriots.

“I would love for him to play for the Patriots,” Freeney’s father said. “But his mom is really, really against that city. The verbal abuse when she went to the game … they treated her badly. She didn’t want to go back.”

While the Patriots could definitely use some help on the defensive line, especially after releasing veterans Brandon Deaderick and Kyle Love earlier this week, Freeney’s most likely destination is in San Diego. Chargers second-year linebacker Melvin Ingram tore his ACL recently, and the team has been looking at Freeney as a possible replacement in the pass rush.

The elder Freeney understands the interest from the Chargers, but he just doesn’t see his son as a fit with the team out West.

“He’s out there now,” Hugh Freeney said. “But they don’t play the kind of defense he needs to be on. … He’ll let us know. It’s all about money now.”

As for the Patriots, Hugh Freeney reiterated his thoughts once more.

“For business purposes, I think it would be a great choice,” he added.

There is definitely interest from the Patriots, as they had Freeney in for a visit early in free agency. But the issues likely still revolve around the money, and it’s unlikely that’s going to change.
