John Farrell Ready for Youngest Son, Luke, to ‘Blaze His Own Trail’ in MLB

Perhaps John Farrell will someday manage one of his sons. For now, though, he’s OK watching from a distance.

Farrell’s youngest son, Luke, was selected in the sixth round of the MLB draft on Friday. The 22-year-old right-hander now joins Farrell’s other two sons, Jeremy and Shane, in kicking off his professional career with an organization other than his father’s.

“As a family, we’re all in agreement for him to blaze his own trail — as the other two have done,” Farrell said. “We’re proud of him.”

Jeremy, an infielder, was selected by the Pirates in the eighth round in 2008, and he’s now in the White Sox’ system. Shane, a pitcher, was drafted by the Blue Jays in the 46th round in 2011, he now works in the Cubs’ baseball operations department.

Luke, who played college baseball at Northwestern, has overcome plenty of adversity to get to this stage of his baseball career. He twice underwent surgery to remove tumors from his neck.

“I’m proud of him for what he’s been able to come back from, what he’s accomplished — and excited for his next chapter in baseball,” John Farrell said.

We’ll have to wait and see how Luke’s career develops, but it’s already abundantly clear that baseball runs in Farrell family’s blood.
