Andrew Bailey to Undergo Shoulder Surgery, Miss Remainder of 2013 Season

Andrew Bailey‘s season is over.

Bailey will undergo right shoulder surgery in New York on Wednesday, and he will miss the remainder of the 2013 season. Orthopedic surgeon David Altchek will perform the procedure.

Bailey, who was placed on the disabled list Friday, has a torn labrum and a torn capsule. The reliever said after being placed on the shelf Friday that surgery was definitely on the table, and after weighing his options, the right-hander has decided to go down that route.

“There were no guarantees [that] he would able to get back to the mound to a normal level through a conservative path,” Red Sox manager John Farrell said before Sunday’s game. “As Andrew weighed all the information that he got from the multiple doctors seen, it was pretty clear cut. The decision was pretty much made for him.”

Bailey said Friday that surgery would be the only way to 100 percent fix the problem. He also said that the procedure typically requires a 12-month recovery process, meaning that the 29-year-old will likely be out until the second half of the 2014 season.

Bailey posted a 3.77 ERA in 28 2/3 innings over 30 appearances this season. The two-time All-Star regained the closer’s job when Joel Hanrahan went down with a season-ending injury, but he eventually lost it after struggling in the role.
