Shane Victorino Tells Brandon McCarthy’s Wife to Be Nice, Apologizes to Pitcher for Line Drive Near Head

Brandon McCarthy is the one guy nobody wants to hit a baseball at.

The Diamondbacks pitcher was hit in the head by a line drive last year when with the A’s and had to have brain surgery after his skull was fractured. While he was eventually OK, the brain contusion reignited talk about the safety of pitchers and whether they should be required to wear something to protect their heads.

On Sunday afternoon, McCarthy was in the middle of another close call when Boston’s Shane Victorino sent a scorcher back to the mound. This time, McCarthy was able to duck out of the way.

McCarthy ended up no worse for wear. Victorino, however, was actually pretty roughed up by the end of the game. Victorino ran into the right field wall trying to make a play, and he was also hit by a McCarthy pitch in a previous at-bat (in fact, he would be hit by a pitch later in the game, too).

After the game, Victorino acknowledged as much while also calling out McCarthy’s wife, Amanda McCarthy. Both McCarthys are known to have a good time on Twitter, and Amanda McCarthy took a poke at McCarthy’s sudden fame since being hit last year in a tweet that referenced Victorino’s hit.

See what Victorino had to say in response in the tweet below.
