Marco van Ginkel Tears ACL in Horrible Leg Twist, Will Miss Rest of 2013-14 Season, World Cup (GIF)

Marco van Ginkel was voted “Dutch Football Talent of the Year” last season, but it will be some time before he showcases his gifts again.

On Tuesday, the 20-year-old Chelsea midfielder tore his right ACL when he fell awkwardly, and his leg buckled underneath him. He suffered the injury just 10 minutes into Chelsea’s League Cup game against Swindon Town. He tried to play on but he was forced to hobble off the field two minutes later.

Scans revealed a torn ACL, which will require surgery followed by 10 months on the sidelines to heal.

The injury ends Van Ginkel’s first season at Chelsea and rules him out of the running for a place in the Netherlands’ 2014 FIFA World Cup squad.
