The Red Sox have 21 games remaining on their regular-season schedule. If they can sustain the 5 1/2-game lead they currently hold in the American League East, they’ll be playoff bound for the first time since 2009.
Nineteen of those games will pit the Sox against division opponents — with a random two-game series in Colorado thrown in — meaning the team will control its own destiny as October nears.
The Boston Globe’s Nick Cafardo joined Tom Caron and Jim Rice on Red Sox GameDay LIVE prior to Thursday’s series opener in New York to preview the home stretch. Hear what he had to say in the video above.
