Patriots’ Struggles Against Tony Gonzalez Could Help Team Game Plan for Jimmy Graham, Other Top-Tier Tight Ends


FOXBORO, Mass. — The Patriots could not stop Tony Gonzalez on Sunday night, but those struggles could actually help them down the road.

New England has some impressive tight ends remaining on its schedule, with games remaining against Julius Thomas, Jordan Cameron and, mostly notably, Jimmy Graham. The Patriots tried multiple combinations to try to limit Gonzalez. The most effective method was double teaming the future Hall of Famer with Jerod Mayo and Jamie CollinsSteve Gregory also had some success against Gonzalez.

Now that the team has seen what worked and what obvious did not, they’ll have a better understanding about how to cover Graham, Thomas, Cameron and the rest of the top-tier tight ends on the schedule.
