That woman, who has since been identified as Kimberly Webster of Plainville, Mass., streaked along the 18th fairway at Muirfield Village Golf Club on Sunday holding an American flag, drawing chants of “USA, USA” from the gallery and confused stares from golfers Steve Stricker and Ernie Els.
Webster was contacted by several media outlets in the days following her sprint. When asked what the reasoning behind her decision was, the 23-year-old said she was just looking to have some fun.
“I wanted to add a little excitement to golf because everyone seemed kind of depressed and like they weren’t having fun because of the weather,” Webster told Stephanie Wei of Wei Under Par. “I hadn’t been to a lot of sporting events. … I just thought it would be interesting to try something like this.
“The day before, it started as a joke. I mentioned it and thought it’d be funny,” she told WZLX’s Karlson and McKenzie on Monday. “I got home, did some research on the top streakers of all time and they seemed to be all men. I thought, let’s try to change this. This will be funny. This will be epic. It’s internationally broadcasted. … I just wish I had the flag the whole time.”
Webster says she had originally planned her streak for when Woods was playing the 17th hole, but when it became apparent that the U.S. might clinch the tournament before that could happen, she improvised.
“I didn’t think Tiger was going to make it to hole 17, so I was looking through the list of players for the Americans and I saw Stricker, and I thought, ‘Streaking for Stricker,’ kind of rhymed,” she said.
Her fun eventually ended when she was accosted by police, but she was assessed only a minor punishment. Webster says she was never handcuffed, only given a $100 fine and later allowed to go back the the course to retrieve her clothes.
