Report: Red Sox Sign Cuban Right-Hander Dalier Hinojosa

Just because the Red Sox are vying for a World Series this season doesn’t mean they’re not working hard to ensure future success.

The Red Sox have signed Cuban right-hander Dalier Hinojosa, according to Baseball America’s Ben Badler. WEEI.com’s Alex Speier has since confirmed the report, and CBSSports.com’s Jon Heyman reports that the Sox will pay Hinojosa a $4 million bonus.

Hinojosa is 27 years old, and according to Baseball America, is equipped with a 88-92 mph fastball, a changeup/splitter and a “slurvy breaking ball.”

“Several scouts believe Hinojosa, who’s around 6 feet, 200 pounds, fits best as a reliever. Given his age and experience, he figures to start in the upper levels of the minors, perhaps Triple-A Pawtucket,” Baseball America reports.

The Dodgers, Cubs and Yankees were also rumored to be interested in Hinojosa. Hinojosa won’t count against the Red Sox’ international amateur spending pool limits because of his age.
