Southampton Goalkeeper Artur Boruc Tries ‘Cruyff Turn,’ Gives Easy Goal to Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud (GIF)

Olivier Giroud should be thankful for Artur Boruc.

Southampton goalkeeper Boruc tried to use a classic piece of skill to trick the Arsenal striker during Saturday’s Premier League game but got his footwork all wrong, allowing Giroud to take the ball and score the simplest of goals.

The goal was Giroud’s first in nearly a month. He converted a penalty kick later in the game, as league-leading Arsenal downed third-placed Southampton 2-0.

Boruc made the error in the 22nd minute after receiving a back pass from Nathaniel Clyne. Instead of kicking the ball upfield or out of bounds, he tried a move which was popularized by Dutch legend Johann Cruyff. At least, that’s what Boruc hilariously claimed on Instagram after the game.

It was Boruc’s second goalkeeping calamity this month. Stoke City goalkeeper Asmir Begovic scored on him from 100 yards away just 13 seconds into a Nov. 2 Premier League game. However, Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino backed his shaky goalkeeper after Saturday’s game, according to the BBC.

“It’s not really necessary to analyze what happened, we all saw it on the pitch,” he said. “We want to support our keeper in spite of this mistake, these things happen.”
