One poor media member’s Tuesday afternoon began with a face full of Derrick Gordon.
The broadcaster’s unfortunate encounter with the UMass guard came late in the second half of the Minutemen’s 11 a.m. date with LSU at Mullins Center. Competing with LSU’s Johnny O’Bryant III for a rebound while UMass clung to a six-point lead, Gordon decided to sell out, diving for the loose ball and soaring straight into press row in the process.
Head coach Derek Kellogg must have loved the sophomore’s hustle play, but the assembled reporters couldn’t have been pleased. The 6-foot-3 Gordon’s dive sent drinks, papers and computers flying, and knocked one guy flat on his back.
Clearly, the early start did not lead to sluggish play, as the teams combined for 182 points in a 92-90 UMass win.
