David Ortiz On Contract Extension With Red Sox: ‘I Think We’re Going To Be Fine’

David Ortiz has been vocal about his desire to extend his contract with the Boston Red Sox beyond 2014, but the slugger downplayed the controversy surrounding his desire for a one-year deal.

“I think we’re going to be fine,” Ortiz told reporters, via The Boston Globe.

Big Papi told reporters Tuesday that there is “no hurry” in reaching an agreement on an extension with the Sox. Ortiz is slated to make $15 million in 2014, but he’ll be a free agent after the 2014 season and hasn’t been shy about his desire to stay in Boston.

Ortiz has spent the better part of his career in Boston, and helped bring the city its first World Series championships in nearly a decade. On Wednesday the Red Sox designated hitter reiterated that he’s happy to be a part of the Red Sox organization.

“I’m super happy to be here,” Ortiz said. “I’m glad to wear this uniform. The fans know I’m more than proud of performing in front of them.”

But Ortiz stood strong in his sentiment about a new contract.

“When things are going well it’s a time for you to agree on things and ask for whatever you want,” he said.

Ortiz’s agent, Fernando Cuza, said plans to speak with Red Sox owner John Henry soon. Henry also spoke Wednesday and said that he was hopeful a deal can be reached.
