Belmont, Mass., native Emily Cook joined fellow U.S. teammate Ashley Caldwell in Friday’s final women’s aerials competition at the 2014 Winter Olympics — but neither of them went on to medal.
After placing fifth in the qualifying round, Cook took a spill in her second jump that would land her out of medal territory. Cook finished eighth, while Caldwell finished tenth.
Alla Tsuper of Belarus won the gold Friday, beating out Australia’s defending champ Lydia Lassila.
Cook is a veteran of the Winter Olympics, having previously competed in the 2006 Torino Games and 2010 Vancouver Games. Despite disappointment over her fall, an eighth-place mark is the 34-year-old’s best finish in her 15-year career, according to the Boston Globe. She finished 19th overall in 2006 and 11th overall in 2010.
Although she has never medaled, Cook is a six-time U.S. champion and was ranked second in the world cup aerial skiing standings coming into Sochi.
