UMass Lowell Tops Minnesota State To Advance To Regional Final Against BC

UMass Lowell topped Minnesota State-Mankato 2-1 on Saturday night in the NCAA Northeast Regional semifinals.

Defenseman Zack Kamrass appeared to seal the victory for the River Hawks when he scored an empty-netter with 40 seconds remaining in the third. But after River Hawk forward Terrence Wallin was whistled for roughing, the Mavericks’ Zach Stepan scored on the power play to cut the deficit to one with 10 seconds to play.

The Mavericks’ late rally to earn their first NCAA Division I tournament win fell just short, however, when they couldn’t capitalize on a faceoff in the Lowell end with 2.2 seconds to play.

Connor Hellebuyck made 35 saves for the River Hawks, while Minnesota State’s Cole Huggins had 23.

The second-seeded River Hawks will meet the No. 1 seed Boston College Eagles on Sunday for a spot in the Frozen Four.
