Liverpool’s Luis Suarez and Steven Gerrard have been named joint Barclays Players of the Month for March, the Premier League announced Friday.
Suarez scored six goals in five games last month for the Reds, who sit atop the league table with 74 points, and Gerrard added four goals of his own.
Though the two technically will share the award, Suarez said the captain will be the one taking home the trophy.
“This prize is more important for Stevie,” Suarez told LiverpoolFC.com. “I spoke with him about what we’re going to do with one prize because we’ve both won Player of the Month — but it’s for him for all he’s done in his career.
“It’s important because in the last few games, he’s scored important goals. All of the players have tried their best on the pitch, and if you have a really good team and squad on the pitch, you have a chance.”
This is the second time in four months that Suarez has won the award; he also was named the league’s best for the month of December. It’s also the second time in two months that the honor has gone to a Liverpool player, as Febuary’s went to Reds forward Daniel Sturridge.
