Manchester United’s Champions League Dreams Alive After Bayern Munich Draw

Many expected Bayern Munich to stroll past Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League, but Tuesday’s game proved that nothing is guaranteed at this stage of the competition.

A determined Manchester United held dominant Bayern Munich to a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford in the first leg of their two-game quarterfinal series.

Bayern Munich, European soccer’s current superpower, predictably controlled much of the game, but the German club fell behind when Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic headed Wayne Rooney’s corner kick past goalkeeper Manuel Neuer in the 58th minute.

Nine minutes later, Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger tied the score when he fired home Mario Mandzukic’s knock-down pass.

Neither team could gain the advantage a second goal would have provided, but Schweinsteiger was sent of in the 90th minute. The 29-year-old’s absence could loom large in deciding which team advances to the semifinal.

The two teams will meet next Wednesday in Munich in the deciding game of their Champions League quarterfinal series.
