Mike Napoli Placed On 15-Day Disabled List; Brandon Workman Recalled

The injuries are starting to pile up for the Boston Red Sox.

One day after sending right fielder Shane Victorino to the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring, the Red Sox announced that they have placed first baseman Mike Napoli on the 15-day DL with a sprained left fourth finger.

While his sprained finger is the official reason for Napoli’s trip to the DL, the first baseman has been battling a number of injuries and ailments, including a nagging hamstring issue and flu-like symptoms that forced him to miss two games last week.

Napoli dislocated his finger on a headfirst slide during an April 15 game against the Chicago White Sox and had been playing through the injury for over a month.

To replace Napoli’s spot on the roster, the Red Sox recalled righthanded reliever Brandon Workman from Triple-A Pawtucket. Workman will make his first start of the 2014 season against the Rays on Sunday, replacing Felix Doubront, who was placed on the disabled list on Wednesday with a left shoulder strain.

Workman has given up one run in 6.1 innings of relief for the Red Sox this season.
