Patrice Bergeron Loses Stick, Still Flips Canadiens’ Rene Bourque (Video)

Stick? Patrice Bergeron doesn’t need no stinking stick.

The Boston Bruins center snapped his goal-scoring instrument late in the third period Thursday night, leading to a turnover and a potential breakaway near the Montreal Canadiens blue line. Undeterred, however, Bergeron flew toward puck carrier Rene Bourque and upended the Habs winger with an open-ice hip check.

The Bruins regained possession after Bergeron’s hit, and defenseman Johnny Boychuk scored for the B’s less than five minutes later to tie the game at three goals apiece.

That score remained unchanged until the end of regulation and though one full overtime period, but Canadiens blueliner P.K. Subban netted his second goal of the game four minutes into the second extra session to give Montreal a 4-3 win in Game 1.

Game 2 of the teams’ second-round Stanley Cup playoff series is set for Saturday afternoon in Boston.
