There’s one other player from that curse-breaking team who’s still kicking around the majors, though, and all he’s done is quietly spend the last decade and a half as one of the most dependable pitchers in baseball.
That would be current Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Bronson Arroyo, who was placed on the disabled list Monday — a result of elbow tendonitis — for the first time in his 15-year major league career. His streak of 369 career starts before his first DL stint was the second-longest in the majors behind Toronto Blue Jays lefty Mark Buehrle (443), according to Elias Sports Bureau.
Arroyo, who has gone 7-4 with a 4.08 ERA in 14 starts this season, spent just two full seasons with the Red Sox, leaving to join the Cincinnati Reds after the 2005 campaign. He spent the next eight years in Cincinnati, throwing 200 or more innings in all but one (199 in 2011) and earning his lone All-Star nod in 2006, before signing a two-year contract with the D-backs this past offseason.
“I don’t know how it’s going to respond after some rest,” Arroyo said Monday of his injured elbow, via AZCentral.com. “I really don’t know what’s going to happen to be honest with you.”
