Dustin Pedroia Ejected From Red Sox-Rays Game; Garin Cecchini Debuts

BOSTON — Dustin Pedroia’s return to the Red Sox’s lineup was short-lived.

Pedroia, who sat out Saturday’s game with a right hand contusion, was ejected from Sunday’s series finale against the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park. The ejection paved the way for Garin Cecchini to make his major league debut.

Pedroia was ejected by home plate umpire D.J. Reyburn before the top of the fourth inning. The second baseman, who grounded out in the bottom of the third inning, came out of the dugout upon being ejected to argue with Reyburn, but Red Sox manager John Farrell intervened.

Jonathan Herrera, who started the game at third base, shifted to second base following Pedroia’s ejection. Cecchini, who was called up before Sunday’s game, was inserted at third base.
