Romero scored in the third minute, and McInerney in the 38th.
“We came out, we dominated,” McInerney said. “We did exactly what we wanted to do.”
Montreal (2-6-4) ended New England’s winning streak at five and its unbeaten run at seven, dropping the Revolution to 7-4-2.
“You have to credit the other team because they came flying,” Revolution coach Jay Heaps said. “In this league, you can’t give a team anything. We gave quite a bit to Montreal, and they took it. Montreal did an excellent job of taking advantage of our slow start and they were ready.”
Later, Nakajima-Farran cut into the middle and fired a powerful strike at Shuttleworth. The keeper bobbled the ball before striker McInerney pounced on the rebound from just outside the 6-yard box.
“We had a stronger start than they did,” Montreal defender Wandrille Lefevre said. “That made a world of difference. We controlled the ball and it allowed us to ease into the game.”
