Germany Damaged 2014 World Cup Trophy, Federation President Says

Germany raced to the top of the soccer world by winning the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Their post-title celebrations might have gone over the top.

Someone in the Germany camp damaged the World Cup trophy during the days-long celebrations that followed last Sunday’s triumph in Brazil, ESPN reports.

The president of the DFB (Germany’s national soccer federation) reportedly told Die Welt that a piece of the trophy FIFA gave Germany was “chipped off” last week.

“At one point, a small piece of our World Cup trophy was chipped off,” Wolfgang Niersbach reportedly said. “But do not worry! We have specialists on the case who can fix it. We have investigated persistently who it was that damaged the trophy, but the investigation was concluded without a result.”

The trophy Germany received is a replica of the iconic, solid-gold FIFA World Cup trophy, which world soccer’s governing body keeps.
