Lapointe, a Hall of Fame defenseman, played on six Stanley Cup-winning teams in 14 years with the Habs. He was a member of the Canadiens’ Big Three alongside Serge Savard and Larry Robinson.
Lapointe will be the 18th Canadien to have his number retired. The No. 5 jersey also has previously been retired for Bernard “Boom Boom” Geoffrion.
Lapointe tallied 166 goals and 416 assists in 777 NHL games from 1968 to 1984.
The 66-year-old now works as the coordinator of amateur scouting for the Wild.
