Boston College Holds Off Wake Forest’s Fourth-Quarter Bid, Wins 23-17
The Eagles built a 20-point fourth-quarter lead over the Demon Deacons but needed an interception by defensive back Justin Simmons with 2:06 remaining to hang on for a 23-17 win in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Boston College established a 17-0 lead in the first half behind a strong ground attack. After Alex Howell’s first-quarter field goal opened the scoring for the Eagles (5-3, 2-2 ACC), running back Jon Hilliman added 33- and 1-yard touchdown runs.
Hilliman finished the game with 101 rushing yards and the two TDs.
Wake Forest (2-6, 0-4 ACC) got on the board in the third quarter with a Mike Weaver field goal. After Eagles quarterback Tyler Murphy’s 37-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Shakim Phillips made it 23-3, the Demon Deacons scored two touchdowns in less than two minutes, thanks to a fumble by BC kick returner Myles Willis.
The home team had the ball with 2:30 left and a chance to tie or win the game, but Simmons’ interception sealed it for the Eagles.
BC will travel to Virginia Tech next Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
