The Detroit Tigers slugger declined his playoff bonus Wednesday when teammate Max Scherzer collected signatures for the paperwork. According to USA TODAY, Cabrera told Scherzer: “I’m not signing anything. I just want the ring.”
The two-time American League MVP isn’t exactly struggling financially, so he likely hasn’t thought twice about refusing the bonus. He signed an eight-year, $292 million contract extension in March.
The 31-year-old regressed this season following back-to-back MVP campaigns, but he still put up superstar-caliber numbers, hitting .313 with 25 homers and 109 RBIs in 159 games.
Cabrera is aiming for his first World Series championship since 2003, when he won the title as a rookie with the then-Florida Marlins.
Game 1 of the American League Division Series between the Tigers and Baltimore Orioles will take place Thursday night at 5:37 p.m. ET on TBS.
