Stephane Quintal might not have to wait long before handing out his first suspension as head of the NHL’s Department of Player Safety.
Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Radko Gudas hit Florida Panthers forward Scottie Upshall with a dangerous elbow to the head in Thursday night’s season opener for both teams.
One of the more shocking aspects of this play was that no penalty was called despite at least one referee having a good look at it.
As George Richards of the Miami Herald notes, this isn’t the first incident between Gudas and Upshall.

Don’t be surprised if Gudas is suspended for this hit, especially when you consider he had all the time in the world to make a legal check and instead targeted Upshall’s head with his elbow. It was a reckless, dangerous play.
