Rajon Rondo Targeting Opening-Night Return For Celtics (Video)

Rajon Rondo is not content to sit back and wait for anything, even if he promised a more patient version of himself at media day Monday.

His latest injury is no different. Boston Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge said the team would be cautious with Rondo’s recovery from a broken left hand, which could force the four-time All-Star to miss at least the first month of the season. Rondo sounds more bullish, though.

“I’m only going to be out for a short period of time,” Rondo said in an interview with CSNNE’s Mike Gorman. “Hopefully, I won’t miss any games this year. Lord willing, I’ll heal correctly and I’ll be back in no time.”

“They’re telling me six to eight (weeks), but that means nothing to me,” Rondo added. “I’m sure they’re going to be very cautious, and Danny already said it, but when I’m ready, this isn’t my knee, this is a finger. It’s a really important part of the body, but it’s a different motor for my knee than for my finger.”

It takes a lot to keep Rondo off the court, clearly. He finished a game with a torn ACL two seasons ago and famously played with a dislocated elbow during the 2011 NBA playoffs. Whether the team allows him to return early is an entirely different matter, but Rondo certainly won’t be the one holding himself off the court.
