Christoph Kramer gave Borussia Dortmund the help it so desperately needed Sunday.

Kramer, a 23-year-old midfielder for Borussia Monchengladbach, scored a spectacularly unfortunate own goal in his team’s 1-0 loss to Borussia Dortmund in Germany’s Bundesliga (first division).

The game was goal-less in the 58th minute when Kramer tried to play a long-range back-pass from the center circle to goalkeeper Yann Sommer. Had Kramer looked up before passing, he would have seen that Sommer already had strayed from his goal line, leaving the goal wide open for Kramer’s 40-yard lobbed pass to enter.

Kramer’s gaffe, the only goal of the game, helped Dortmund end a five-game losing streak and climb from the floor of the Bundesliga standings. The loss was the first of the season for third-place Monchengladbach.
