Esteban Ramirez’s Volley Is Surefire ‘Goal Of The Year’ Candidate (GIF)

Esteban Ramirez is bound to make us pay more attention to Costa Rican soccer than we otherwise would.

Ramirez scored one of the best goals we’ve seen this year, helping hosts Club Sport Herediano beat Deportivo Saprissa 3-2 in a Primera Division (Costa Rican first division) game.

Herediano was leading 2-1 in the first half Sunday when a Saprissa defender’s clearing header fell to Ramirez. What Ramirez did next was jaw-dropping and stretched the limits of the imagination.

Ramirez sent himself, his teammates and most of the 8,700 fans in attendance at Herediano’s Eladio Rosabal Cordero Stadium into a state of ecstasy with his stunning strike.

Ramirez’s goal ultimately stood as the game-winner. It would have been a shame if a goal of that quality was any less consequential.
