Israeli Soccer Player Fights Fan, As Brawl Mars Tel Aviv Derby (Video)

A game between the two biggest teams in Tel Aviv, Israel, had one ugly ending Monday.

Hapoel Tel Aviv and Maccabi Tel Aviv played each other in the Israeli Premier League, but the game was abandoned at halftime after a series of fights between players and fans.

The chaos started in the 33rd minute, when a fan ran onto the field and attacked Maccabi striker Eran Zahavi, who fought back before security intervened.

The referee then sent off Zahavi, and both teams began pushing and shoving.

Order soon was restored, and the game continued for a few minutes before fans of both teams began running onto the field and disrupting play.

The referee abandoned the game while the teams were in the dressing room.

Hapoel manager Eyal Berkovic condemned the violence.

“This was not a game of football, it was war,” Berkovic said, according to the BBC. “I’m stunned and ashamed to be involved in football on a day like today.

“Both clubs and both sets of supporters must be severely punished for what happened here.”

Tel Aviv police arrested 10 fans and could detain others for their role in the violence.
