FOXBORO, Mass. — Jonas Gray might need to invest in a better phone charger.

The New England Patriots running back was sent home from Gillette Stadium on Friday after arriving to the facility late, according to two sources with knowledge of the situation. The Providence Journal’s Mark Daniels first reported Gray’s tardiness. Head coach Bill Belichick’s policy is to send a player home from practice if he arrives late. Gray was not present at practice Friday.

Gray set an alarm on his phone, which died overnight, ESPN.com’s Mike Reiss reported. Gray plans to return to Gillette Stadium on Friday night to apologize to Belichick for being late.

Gray’s absence at practice could allow either running back Shane Vereen or LeGarrette Blount to start Sunday against the Detroit Lions. Linebacker Akeem Ayers missed practice last Friday, and rookie Zach Moore started the first defensive series in his place two days later.

Gray is coming off a 37-carry, 201-yard performance against the Indianapolis Colts last week. He also is featured on this week’s cover of Sports Illustrated.
