Forward Jared Sullinger will be out for the rest of the season after further medical evaluation showed he sustained a left metatarsal stress fracture, the team announced Sunday. Sullinger suffered the injury in a win over the Atlanta Hawks on Feb. 11.
The forward averaged 14.4 points and 8.1 rebounds per game — both team bests — in 51 games this season.
While Sullinger certainly is a big loss for Boston, the acquisition of Isaiah Thomas hopefully will ease the pain a bit. The former Phoenix Suns guard — who came to Boston at the trade deadline in exchange for Marcus Thornton — will be the Celtics’ new leading scorer having averaged 15.2 points per game in Phoenix.
However, it’s still unclear if Thomas will be available for Sunday night’s game against the Los Angeles Lakers.
