FORT MYERS, Fla — The Boston Red Sox aren’t sweating David Ortiz’s absence.
While Ortiz is the only Red Sox player who hasn’t reported to spring training, manager John Farrell said Monday at JetBlue Park he fully expects the slugger to arrive at camp on time to take his physical and participate in Wednesday’s first official full-squad workout.
Farrell said Monday he didn’t have an exact arrival date for Ortiz. He also hadn’t had any direct contact with the nine-time All-Star as of Monday morning. Tuesday marks the official reporting date for position players, though, so perhaps Ortiz will come walking through the clubhouse doors in less than 24 hours.
Ortiz is entering his 19th major league season (13th with Boston). The 39-year-old remains an integral part of the Red Sox’s success. His arrival will only increase the buzz surrounding the club this spring.
