Rajon Rondo Honored By Kobe Bryant’s Recruiting But Looking To Win With Mavs

A Kobe Bryant-Rajon Rondo union very well could happen next season. But until then, don’t expect Rondo to have much to say on the matter.

Rondo’s Dallas Mavericks visited Bryant’s Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday, and the point guard was asked after the game how he feels about Bryant’s ongoing effort to bring him to L.A.

“He’s one of the best that’s ever played our game,” Rondo responded, via ESPN.com. “When he speaks, it speaks volumes. It’s an honor and a compliment that he’d want to play with a guy like me. But right now I’m focused on winning a championship with the Dallas Mavericks.”

But would Rondo want to play with Bryant, his NBA Finals foe-turned-breakfast partner?

“I’m focused on what I have to do right now,” he said. “It’s impossible to play with Kobe right now.”

Bryant sure is putting in the effort, though. He said back in January — a month after the Boston Celtics dealt Rondo to the Mavericks — that he’d continue recruiting Rondo until the latter signs a contract extension.

Bryant also made a rare appearance on the Lakers’ bench for Sunday’s 100-93 loss to the Mavs — his first since suffering a season-ending shoulder injury Jan. 21, according to ESPN.com’s Baxter Holmes.

Rondo, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer, said this weekend that he would be open to re-signing with Dallas.
