UAlbany Women Down Hartford 84-75, Win Fourth Straight America East Title

Stop us if you’ve heard this before: The University of Albany Great Danes are America East champs.

That should sound familiar, as the Albany women’s basketball team dispatched Hartford 84-75 on Friday night to capture its fourth consecutive America East title and earn an automatic bid in the 2015 NCAA tournament.

As she had all so many times, Shereesha Richards led the charge for the Great Danes, pouring in 28 points en route to being named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.

Albany took a 10-point lead into halftime, but the Hawks hung around, going on a 13-6 run at the beginning of the second half to tie the score with 13:32 remaining. Yet the Great Danes would not be denied, following with a 12-2 run of their own to jump in front for good.

The Albany women’s squad is just the second team in America East history to win four consecutive league championships. The team will discover its NCAA tournament opponent during the selection show March 15.
