Brock Holt seemingly can do it all.
Utility players have become extra important in recent years with Major League Baseball teams looking for every avenue possible to exploit matchup advantages and keep regulars fresh. Holt has thrived in a super utility role with the Boston Red Sox, making him a very valuable commodity.
Holt was the only player in MLB last season to start at first base, second base, third base, shortstop, left field, right field and center field. He also became the first Red Sox player ever to accomplish the feat, which is saying something given the organization’s illustrious history.
Holt’s versatility already has been on display in 2015, with the 26-year-old providing good offense, nifty defense and immeasurable energy from a number of different positions. It begs the question: Is there anyone else in MLB quite like Brock?
It’s difficult to rank MLB’s “best utility players” — or in Holt’s case, “super utility players” — because roles change frequently, one can debate the value of versatility versus production from one position, etc. But the following players, like Holt, have shown an ability to make an impact all over the diamond — both in the infield and the outfield — either in 2015 or as recently as last season.
