Kris Bryant has seen his fair share of the spotlight in 2015.
The 23-year-old super-prospect sparked debate before Opening Day when the Chicago Cubs reassigned him to Triple-A Iowa despite his amazing production in spring training. The Cubs recalled Bryant 13 days later, which alled the club to delay his his free agency by one year to 2021.
Bryant had a rough go of it in his MLB debut Friday, but he still figures to make an immediate impact in Chicago. So did the Cubs put their playoff hopes in jeopardy by delaying Bryant’s call-up?
In debating the issue, the crew on “Red Sox First Pitch” agreed on one thing: It’s hard to imagine a similar situation happening in Boston.
“We saw it (two years ago) when there was a lot of hype about Jackie Bradley Jr.,” host Tom Caron said before Friday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles. “It didn’t work out that way, but the debate was, ‘Would they wait on his service time?’ and they brought him up at the beginning of the year because they thought he would help his team.”
Watch Caron, Nick Cafardo and former Red Sox pitcher Tim Wakefield discuss the Cubs’ handling of Bryant in the video above.
