The Kansas City Royals have been very good. The Boston Red Sox have not been very good.

Thus, the Red Sox have their hands full this weekend against the defending American League champions. Boston will need to bring its A-game to avoid digging a deeper hole in the AL East.

The Royals, who entered Friday’s series opener at Kauffman Stadium with a 3 1/2-game lead over the Minnesota Twins in the AL Central, rank near the top of the league in several categories. They also could have eight players starting in the All-Star Game, which is impressive, even if it’s mostly a product of a flawed voting process that might soon be addressed by Major League Baseball.

It’s been a disappointing season for the Red Sox. Perhaps a good showing in K.C. will spark change.
