Abby Wambach Hints At Retirement In Emotional Talk About Team USA (Video)

Abby Wambach is arguably the greatest women’s soccer player the United States has ever seen. She also has never won a FIFA Women’s World Cup.

In her 14th year as a member of the U.S. women’s national team, Wambach sat in front of the camera in true confessional style to reveal her thoughts on what it means to have a dream, what it takes to achieve those dreams, and what playing for Team USA means to her.

The result is an inspiring, emotional video which, in its final seconds, will give you chills.

“We all have dreams,” Wambach says. “If you’re out there and you have a dream and you want something — and you want something so bad … you’ve got to risk everything. You’ve got to risk being completely devastated if you don’t achieve it. And when you fall down, you’ve got to get back up. And so that’s what this means. That’s what this is. That’s who we are.”

Wambach, 35, also hints at retirement late in the video. With the next Women’s World Cup four years away, this likely will be the last World Cup game Wambach ever plays in.

“It’s never easy to say goodbye,” she adds. “You always want to go out on top, you always want there to be that fairy tale-like ending. I hope that this is it.”
