MLB Condemns Colin Cowherd’s ‘Offensive’ Remarks About Dominican Players

What Colin Cowherd probably intended to be a throwaway line as part of a broader (yet just as dubious) point has generated controversy that does not seem to be dying down. Even the league he called into question during said rant has chosen to respond.

“Major League Baseball condemns the remarks made by Colin Cowherd, which were inappropriate, offensive and completely inconsistent with the values of our games,” the MLB statement read, per FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal. “Mr. Cowherd owes our players of Dominican origin, and Dominican people generally, an apology.”

The outgoing ESPN Radio host insulted the intellect of Dominican players when, in discussing Miami Marlins manager Dan Jennings’ inexperience during Thursday’s show, he argued against the idea that baseball is “too complex.”

“The game is too complex?” Cowherd said. “I’ve never bought into that, ‘Baseball’s just too complex.’ A third of the sport is from the Dominican Republic. The Dominican Republic has not been known in my lifetime as having world-class academic abilities.”

MLB’s reaction could mean trouble for Cowherd, who has announced he will leave ESPN this year. The plan is for him to join FOX Sports, but given that network’s relationship with MLB — and the fact Rosenthal, who posted the above MLB statement on Facebook, works for FOX — Cowherd’s future might have just gotten a bit more murky.
