BOSTON — It’s official. No. 45 is off limits.
The Red Sox retired Pedro Martinez’s No. 45 during a special ceremony Tuesday night at Fenway Park. Martinez, who was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y., over the weekend, dazzled the Boston crowd with both humor and grace throughout the festivities.
Several of Martinez’s former Red Sox teammates participated in the pregame event, with former Boston catcher Jason Varitek even catching the Hall of Famer’s ceremonial first pitch. Martinez’s No. 45 now adorns the right-field facade at Fenway Park, alongside the franchise’s other all-time greats.
