The New England Patriots are getting a head start on cutting their roster down to 75 players.

The Patriots waived linebacker Cameron Gordon and offensive lineman Mark Asper on Thursday. They also released defensive tackle Antonio Johnson and waived/injured tight end Jake Bequette. If Bequette clears waivers, he’ll revert to injured reserve, ending his season.

Bequette was selected as a defensive end out of Arkansas in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft. He moved to tight end this offseason and looked promising at the new position before he suffered an injury two weeks ago. He spent all of last season on the Patriots’ practice squad.

The Patriots already have trimmed their roster down to 84 players. They must cut down to 75 players by Sept. 1. The deadline to whittle the roster down again to 53 players is Sept. 5 by 4 p.m.
