FOXBORO, Mass. — Tom Brady did indeed line up under center for the New England Patriots on Thursday, but his on-field cameo did not last long.
Brady played two series against the Green Bay Packers in the Patriots’ preseason opener, completing 1 of 4 passes for 10 yards. He overthrew receiver Josh Boyce on his first pass attempt of the night, then had Boyce drop his second.
The quarterback’s lone completion was to wideout Brandon Gibson on the first play of New England’s second drive. He threw incomplete to tight end Michael Hoomanawanui three plays later, forcing the Patriots to punt for a second time.
After the ensuing Green Bay possession culminated in a Mason Crosby field goal, Jimmy Garoppolo took over for Brady. Garoppolo, a second-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, is in line to begin the season as the Patriots’ starting quarterback if Brady’s four-game suspension is upheld in federal court.
