While Josh McDaniels was coaching a fired up Tom Brady during the first half of the New England Patriots’ AFC Divisional Playoff against the Kansas City Chiefs, the Tennessee Titans turned to a familiar face as their new head coach.

The Titans hired Mike Mularkey, who served as the team’s interim coach after Ken Whisenhunt was fired, as their permanent head coach. ESPN’s Adam Schefter was the first to report the hiring. The Titans went 2-7 under Mularkey and finished with the worst record in the NFL.

Success has been hard to come by for Mularkey as an NFL coach. He has an 18-39 record over parts of four seasons as the lead man for the Buffalo Bills, Jacksonville Jaguars and Titans.

McDaniels, New England’s offensive coordinators, reportedly was interested in the Titans’ opening, but that’s as far as those rumors went.
