South Dakota State is seeking to raise its national profile and upset Maryland, as action in the NCAA Tournament South Region continues for a second day.
Maryland and South Dakota State will face off Friday at the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena in Spokane, Wash., in a First Round game between the Nos. 5 and 12 seeded teams in the region. Maryland, the 2002 national champion, is the favorite against South Dakota State, the Summit League regular-season and tournament champions, but anything can happen in a “win-or-go-home” situation.
Sophomore guard Melo Trimble and freshman center Diamond Stone will play key roles for Maryland.
South Dakota State will look to redshirt freshman center Mike Daum to give it an advantage on the blocks, as it seeks its first-ever win in an NCAA Tournament game.
The winner of the game will face either California or Hawaii in the second round.
