Xander Bogaerts, Mookie BettsThe Boston Red Sox’s 2016 season could go in about 20,000 different directions.

It’s been an interesting stretch for the Red Sox, who have finished in last place three of the last four years with a World Series title sprinkled in. Boston hasn’t established much consistency, but another eventful offseason gives reason for optimism as the season begins Monday.

The Red Sox added an ace (David Price), an elite closer (Craig Kimbrel), an impact reliever (Carson Smith) and a powerful outfielder (Chris Young) amid their winter flurry of moves. If those newcomers leave their marks and the Red Sox receive bounce-back performances from a few key players, there’s no reason why Boston can’t contend in the wide open American League East.

Admittedly, those are big “ifs,” which is why a lot of Red Sox fans are being cautious with their hopefulness. There are so many question marks, and it’s nearly impossible to predict what each player will provide this season, let alone what the organization will accomplish collectively.

But hey, who doesn’t love predictions? Although we could end up being wrong, we’re not going to let that stops us from taking a stab at what’s going to unfold in Boston over the next six-plus months.
