Shakhtar Donetsk visits Sevilla’s Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium on Thursday in the second leg of their Europa League semifinal series. The teams are tied 2-2 on aggregate, as Kevin Gameiro’s late penalty kick secured a draw on April 28 in the first leg. Sevilla should improve in the second leg, but it must beware Shakhtar Donetsk’s ever-dangerous counter-attack.
Shakhtar Donetsk is coming off a 3-0 win over Dynamo Kyiv last weekend in the Ukrainian Premier League. The visitors will rely on experienced fullback Darijo Srna and striker Eduardo to help navigate the tricky test in Sevilla, but midfielder Fred is suspended for the game.
Shakhtar Donetsk coach Mircea Lucescu admits Sevilla’s players are “European specialists,” as the hosts won the Europa League in 2014 and 2015. But Sevilla is slumping, having won only once in its last six games in all competitions. Jose Antonio Reyes isn’t expected to play for Sevilla on Thursday. The Spanish forward underwent an appendectomy recently.
This game’s winner will face either Liverpool or Villarreal in the final on May 18 in Basel, Switzerland.
