After the dumpster fire that was the St. Louis Rams’ quarterback situation last season, nobody was surprised when the Rams used the first overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft to select Cal QB Jared Goff.
At least one member of the Rams organization, however, apparently was not enthused by the idea of Goff joining the fray.
From ESPN.com’s Jim Trotter:
“Veteran quarterback Nick Foles, a regular when offseason workouts began April 18, has not participated in a team-run training session since the Rams took Goff first overall. The fifth-year pro even skipped the start of organized team activities on Tuesday, and multiple sources told ESPN.com it is because the Rams drafted a quarterback.”
Sure, it can’t feel great to have your team use such a high draft pick on someone who plays the same position as you. But c’mon, Nick. Let’s be reasonable here.
Foles was a disaster in his first season in a Rams uniform, posting the NFL’s second-worst completion percentage and throwing just seven touchdown passes in 11 games. He was benched in favor of Case Keenum — who also is battling for the starting job in the Rams’ first season back in Los Angeles — and did not play in the team’s final four games.
In other words, Foles isn’t exactly arguing from a position of strength.
Interestingly, the player the Rams traded to the Philadelphia Eagles to acquire Foles appears to taking a different approach to a similar situation. Sam Bradford reportedly wanted out of Philadelphia after the team drafted Carson Wentz second overall, but Bradford has been present at Eagles OTAs and even had plenty of nice things to say about his new teammate.
“(Wentz) has been great,” Bradford told reporters Tuesday, via ESPN.com. “He’s a great kid. He’s really talented. It’s been fun working with him, trying to help him, trying to share bits of information that I’ve picked up along the way.”
