MLB Rumors: Andrew Cashner Interest Grows, As Marlins, Astros Mull Trade

Andrew Cashner’s future with the San Diego Padres is uncertain, but his Major League Baseball career undoubtedly will continue beyond the Aug. 1 trade deadline.

The Padres are in trade talks with the Miami Marlins and Houston Astros over trading Cashner, perhaps in exchange for prospects, The Knuckleball’s Jon Heyman reported Sunday. Cashner will be a free agent after this season and is resigned to leaving the Padres. San Diego is keen to cash in on the 29-year-old right-handed pitcher, instead of losing him as a free agent.

San Diego reportedly is interested in acquiring Josh Naylor, a highly rated first baseman in the Marlins’ minor-league system.

The Baltimore Orioles, Detroit Tigers, San Francisco Giants and Texas Rangers also are in the hunt for Cashner, according to Heyman.

The Padres, currently 43-56, are in rebuilding mode, and Cashner might not be the only one to leave by the trade deadline, according to Yahoo! Sports’ Jeff Passan.

Tis the season for bad teams to stock up on young talent that might blossom into future stars.
