Adele Wasn’t Formally Offered Super Bowl LI Halftime Show, Says NFL

So, it sounds like Adele won’t be involved in the halftime show at Super Bowl LI. But was the Grammy Award-winning singer even offered the gig?

Adele told an audience at a recent show that she turned down an offer to perform at the big game in Houston, Texas, according to Variety.com. The NFL and Pepsi (the official sponsor of the Super Bowl halftime show) since have denied ever extending a formal offer, though, leaving football fans to wonder who’s telling the truth.

“The NFL and Pepsi are big fans of Adele,” the NFL and Pepsi said in a joint statement released Sunday, via Billboard.com. “We have had conversations with several artists about the Pepsi Super Bowl Halftime Show. However, we have not at this point extended a formal offer to Adele or anyone else. We are focused on putting together a fantastic show for Houston and we look forward to revealing that in good time.”

Perhaps the NFL floated the idea by Adele and was shot down before things progressed to a “formal offer” stage. Or maybe Adele’s just making stuff up. Who really knows, and who really cares?

The only certainty is that Adele probably won’t take the stage at NRG Stadium come Feb. 5, which could be a good thing so long as the NFL and Pepsi actually pick a solid performer when the dust settles.
